Encoders

Incremental and Absolute EncodersEncoders are used to determine the position, velocity and direction of a motor shaft or other mechanical motion, required for the precise control of applications such as positioning a rotary table, pick and place, packaging, and more. Choose an Incremental or absolute encoder depending on data retention requirements.

The Incremental J-Series of standard shaft encoders is now discontinued. Please consider the TRN-Series of medium, hollow and absolute standard shaft encoders for a comparable replacement or contact sales staff for more information.

Incremental Encoders, Absolute Encoders, Encoder Kits and Accessories

Encoders are used in all types of motion sensing applications, including machine tooling, semiconductor positioning and multi-axis positioning. All Koyo encoders feature a reinforced aluminum diecast casing and come equipped with a two-meter cable or MS connector. All kit encoders (for stepper motors) are ready-to-mount, with hardware and shaft adapters included.

Use incremental encoders with our PLC high-speed input modules for accurate position monitoring. Absolute encoders provide immediate position information on power-up (without a homing sequence) and can be wired to standard PLC DC input cards. Cables, mounting brackets and flexible couplings are also available.

Medium Duty Incremental Encoders (Quadrature)

Medium-duty encoders are the most popular encoders, offering the greatest flexibility of choice with high quality, all for a very low price.

Medium Duty Incremental Encoders

  • Incremental resolution available from 3 pulses per revolution to 5000 pulses per revolution
  • 8mm or 3/8-in solid shaft, 8mm hollow shaft
  • Medium body: 2 inch or 50mm diameter
  • Dust proof (IP50) or splash proof (IP65) ratings
  • Line driver or totem-pole output
  • Up to 200 kHz response frequency
  • Two-meter cable with tinned ends or MS connector

Heavy Duty Incremental Encoders (Quadrature)

A heavy-duty encoder is the most rugged encoder you can buy. Top-of-the-line bearings help maintain a service life of 12 billion revolutions and allow significant loads on the shaft.

Heavy Duty Incremental Encoders
  • Incremental operation from 30 pulses/revolution to 5000 pulses/revolution
  • 10mm solid shaft
  • Large body: 3 inch or 78mm diameter
  • Splash proof (IP65) rating
  • Totem-pole output
  • Up to 100 kHz response frequency
  • Two-meter cable with tinned ends

Medium Duty Absolute Encoders (Gray Code)

Absolute encoders use gray code (a version of binary where the outputs only change state one bit at a time) to describe each position, so position data is not lost when power is cycled AND the response frequency is slower for a given resolution.

Medium Duty Absolute Encoders
  • Absolute resolution available from 32 to 2048 pulses per revolution
  • 8mm solid shafts
  • Small body with 50mm diameter
  • Splash proof (IP65) rating
  • Resolution ranges from 5-bit to 11-bit gray code output
  • Up to 20 kHz response frequency
  • Two-meter cable with tinned ends
